What is Naturopathic Medicine?

It is the philosophy that defines the medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is a unique healing system that works under this philosophy, that the body has the innate ability to heal itself if it is given the proper conditions conducive to the healing process. So often when people get sick or injured they take unnecessary chemical drugs that can mask the symptoms of the condition, but do not address the underlying cause of the problem. So the process of disease will continue unnoticed in the body until it shows itself as new symptom, which is then masked with more chemical drugs that have their own set of side effects. At the Yates Naturopathic Clinic we take the time to ask one question frequently, and that is “WHY?”. We ask, why do you have a headache? Not just how do we mask the pain. Why do you have arthritis? Not just how many anti-inflammatory medications can you take before your liver enzymes become elevated. Why are you depressed? Not just take these anti-depressants. Understanding the body is giving you these symptoms as a sign that there is an underlying imbalance in your body allows the Naturopathic Physician to work with you to treat the root of your health concerns.

Naturopathic training

Doctors of Naturopathy are required to complete a four year University undergraduate degree followed by four years of intensive Naturopathic training at a registered Naturopathic College. The program includes an in depth study of the medical sciences, botanical medicine, joint manipulation, homeopathy, acupuncture, lab analysis and nutrition. Before graduating Naturopathic doctors must also obtain 500 hours of clinical training in outpatient facilities.

Naturopathic Doctors must also complete two sets of board exams before being able to practice as a Licensed Naturopath. There are many other doctors practicing under similar titles that are not Licensed Naturopathic Doctors and do not have the training required to diagnose and treat patients. Such titles often include Natural Doctors, Natural Medical Doctors or Holistic Doctor. Don’t be afraid to ask to see the Doctors credentials and License number.
